Transforming lives
through food

We help people overcoming barriers to employment gain job and life skills while feeding our community. It starts with food but grows from there into career pathways that provide stability and economic mobility.

WHO WE ARE

FareStart is a social enterprise nonprofit focused on job training and employment. We run food-based businesses that serve as classrooms for our students to learn on-the-job skills that will prepare them for careers while nourishing the community and sustainably funding our mission. Our end goal is personal stability and economic mobility for people overcoming barriers to employment.

DINING

Food is the foundation of our work. It’s the tool we use to transform lives, disrupt poverty and nourish communities. Our restaurant and cafés have long been central to this work.

Feeding our mission

FareStart’s dining venues serve as classrooms for our students and help support our mission. We run these social enterprise businesses to train people on the job for future careers in food-related industries. Your support and patronage have a direct impact on our ability to fund these job training programs.

FareStart businesses are open and providing on-the-job training opportunities for students, including the FareStart Cafés, our Community & School Meals Program and made-to-order Box Lunches.

In addition, plans are underway to fully reopen the flagship FareStart Restaurant later this spring for breakfast and lunch, cater private events at the FareStart Restaurant and host Guest Chef Nights.

  • A big congrats to Eli, a Barista & Customer Service Program student who graduated from our free, eight-week job training program, secured semi-permanent housing and landed two jobs!

"l'm feeling very optimistic," says Eli. "I'm tired of staying in a homeless shelter. I want to get my own apartment. I want to live my life already.”

Eli's path has had some challenges, but he's determined to fight for the things that matter to him. "Meaning, am I going to fight with someone that's for dumb stuff, or am I going to fight for a house and fight for a car and fight for my dreams type of stuff?”

Eli had this to say about his future: “I think somewhere along the way I do see myself being a barista. And if I choose not to, this chapter of my life has taught me how to be professional and character traits that I have to follow in the workplace, like being punctual, do your job, be a team player.”

A big congrats to Eli, a Barista & Customer Service Program student who graduated from our free, eight-week job training program, secured semi-permanent housing and landed two jobs!

Huge thanks to everyone who helped advocate for funding from Washington State to reopen the FareStart Restaurant and expand job training opportunities for students! FareStart was included in the final budget, and we’ll be able to access $300,000 to help support our work in the year ahead.
