Another year has come to a conclusion and it’s the opportune time to reflect upon the achievements during the year.

The first term unfolded with good planning for future activities such as the AMC, FMC, TMC, and the CDU visit.

The teachers worked in full gear to meet the requirements. It was 2’ of April when I went on sick leave for almost three months. Mr. Deo acted as HOD while I was away. Miss Lata and Mr. Matewai assisted the department as well.

I thank Mr. Deo for coming up with brilliant ideas such as subject analysis forth and the exam conduct form. I would also like to thank the Yat Sen Mathematics Association for keeping its torch alight through organizing speed tests and preparing students for the various competitions Once again, the department has achieved success in the various competitions that the students took part in.

 

Fiji Mathematics Competition.

The Fiji Mathematics Competition was held on Thursday May at the school. The number of students taking part has increased four fold. This only shows the enthusiasm and the will to strive for excellence by the students.

There were four prizes of $20.00 each won by Herah Hanji (Class 7), Amitaath Narsey (Class 8), Ephrem Elder (Form 3), and Bob Olutimayin (Form 4). The analysis is as follows:

Team Mathematics Competition (TMC)

The southern zone team competition was held at FCAE on Friday 28 June. This year the class 6 team was included. All teams except for Form 3 qualified for the finals after an excellent performance. The final was held at Tilak High School on the 14 September, 2002. For a change the school contingent travelled on Friday 13 September and stayed at the Raffles Gateway.

I would like to thank the accompanying teachers, Mr. Deo, Mr. Young, Miss. Ram, and Mr. Nute for taking good care of the students. I also thank the school management and Mrs. Ali for sponsoring the trip (transportation, accommodation, and meals) so that the students could enjoy meals at McDonalds and Chopsticks. I would like to congratulate the winners. Yat Sen School came second overall in both primary and secondary categories.

 

Awards evening.

The awards evening was held on Friday 14 June at the Civic Centre. Yan Yi Li, Weiling Wang, and Yu Mao Loo received prizes for scoring highest in last years FMC competition.The awards evening is an annual event organized by FMA. The FMA awards student’s certificates, trophies, and worthwhile gift packs for their achievements in the FMA activities, highest scores in external mathematics exams and mathematic student of the year award.

 

Junior Physics Quiz.

The Junior Physics was organized by the South Pacific Physics Society. Nine of our form four students took part in the competition. Albert Fiu (4C) was awarded a prize for scoring the highest mark overall. The presentation was done during the USP open day. I would like to congratulate him for a fine effort and thank Miss Reena Lata Ram for being the coordinator.

 

Australian Mathematics Competition. (AMC)

The AMC was held on Tuesday, 30 July. The number of students taking part has increased to 141. Six cash prizes were won this year: Mao Long Yuen (3A) in Junior Division; Chung Yin Fei (5H), Kevin Yip (5H), and Wei Ling Wang (5H) in the Intermediate Division and Yu Mao Loo (Form 7) in the Senior Division. The Special Achievement Certificate went to Chung Yin Fei for best standard score. Danni Yao received the special achievement award, the AMC T-Shirt for having the best standardized score and least number of wrong answers. The summary is as follows:

Australian Computer Competition

The Australian Computer Competition was held on Tuesday 2l May 2002. The number of students taking part increased two fold to fifty. There were three gold medals won this year. The winners are Furqan Nasair (Form 4D), Chung Yin Fei (5H) and Yu Mao Loo (7P). Mao has won gold medal for three consecutive years now. Congratulations! The results are as follows:

I would like to thank the school management for providing ten new computers to the school computer laboratory.

 

Field Trip

The form 6 and form 7 Physics, Technical Drawing and Computing students went to the west for a two day field trip. They stayed at the Raffles Gateway and visited the FSC at Lautoka, the Weather Station in Nadi and the Pacific Green Timber Processing Factory. The trip was enjoyable, educational, and informative to the students and teachers as well. I would like to thank Mr. Deo, Mrs. Kumar, and Mr. S. Kumar, Mr. B. Kumar and Mrs. Patel for accompanying the students on the trip.

On behalf of the department I would like to once again congratulate all the winners and to non-winners, better luck next year.

Finally, many thanks to the YSMA for grooming students for the various competitions. My hearty thanks to all the teachers in the department for their cooperation and dedication in ensuring a successful mathematical year. I would also like to thank the school administration for their guidance and support in the various activities of the department. I take this opportunity to specially thank Mrs. Ali for her cooperation and consideration during my difficult times and the teachers for adjusting to changing timetable. My special thanks and appreciation to the students for the lovely cards of encouragement and good health.
