THE CIVIL STATUS IN WESTERN EUROPE

The European genealogist relies for his research to a large extent on civil status documents, the content of which varies from state to state. the other and whose consultation obeys specific rules.

Many other sources are also exploitable. In addition, the genealogist has to deal with the dispersion of the wanted people.

Locating them abroad is a delicate task that involves a particular technique of investigations involving the implementation significant resources.

In practice, the parent's link fundamentally establishes the aid of the acts of the civil state, each act constituting the link of the chane which attaches family members.

The work of the genealogist therefore begins necessarily with the consultation of these acts which will be carried out in the country concerned.

The main sources useful for research are different from one country to another and each have specific characteristics both in terms of of their content than at the level of their consultation.

The civil states in the various countries, in most cases, present particular characteristics.

It may even be - and this is particularly true in certain non-European states - that they are insufficiently organized, imperfect or even incomplete or more simply random access, hence the need to carry out additional checks in other sources.

Be that as it may, the difficulties of accessing and consulting the civil status of European countries are often overlooked and, for example, therefore largely underestimated.
